Secret shopper jobs?

i was wondering how somebody gets into the whole secret shopping business? i have seen a lot of websites that advirtise for secret shopper jobs, but you have to pay money for a membership to get a list of jobs available. i am interested, but dont want to pay money for something thats not going to help me. is anybody out there a secret shopper that could help me, or know anything that could help me??
