Should i start my business rite away, or should i build my clients 1st?

im a barber student, ill be done studying and getting my license in a few months. i was thinking of maybe opening my own barbershop "because i really dont like working for anybody". but a few of my friends think that i should work at a barbershop and build clients 1st and then maybe in the future open my own shop. but again i think i can just have my own shop and make flyers and advertisement. anyways what do you think?

go for it! gotta have cash for the bills for the first few months but after that it should look after itself. word of mouth is the best advertising you can have so don't worry about spending a ton on advertising for the first while. when word gets out that you do a good job, people like the way you interact with clients and run a clean shop, you should be alright. if it don't work out then go to work for someone else. i have a computer shop that i run out of my house. i have never advertised but do a good deal of business because i am willing to go the extra mile to make myself successful. don't undercut prices just be reasonable. working in another place and using them to build a client base might bite you in the butt in the long run because if you build a client base then open your own shop and take them with you it might create bad blood between you and the shop you started in. don't burn bridges! and never talk badly about competition. you may need them in the future.

best of luck!

go out on your own and advertise... there's plenty of ways to generate clientele and it seems like you have the ambition already... don't get stuck workin' for someone else... you can always go back to that if it didn't work out...

don't degrade yourself; if you don't want to work for anyone, you don't have to work for anyone.

start your own business, you'll get clients by getting their eye.

make a classy store-front, and offer grand-opening discounts, you'll get people coming in. (how else do you think privately owned biz's flourish?)

but if you need the money to actually have enough funds to open up a shop, then by all means, work for a few years at someone elses place.

I think either decision would make you sucessful if you persevere and don't give up. However, I think working for someone first could give you a really good understanding of the business, especially if this is your first time working out there in this field. You can learn real life lessons of the business that no school could teach -- things you can only learn from experience,.. you can be mentored by others in your field who have more experience too, and also meet people, gain new friends and clients.... if you start off with someone else's company, you can gain enough to start your own and have a network of people that can help you out.

If you start off cold turkey, straight out of school, it's harder to get through the difficult moments if you didn't already build relationships with people in the business who could help you out.

You can choose not to be a barber if you dont like the job. If you want to go ahead with what you have planned, you even can have your own website to promote you barber shop. Get a domain name, email account & webhosting from here: http://www.website.ws/powercontrol
