Handicap accessibility for small business? |
I am opening a small gift shop in a home built in 1910 in Wisconsin. I own the building myself but do not live there. Am I required to make the shop handicap accessible? It depends. Is the building is registered as a historic place or located in a section of town with zoning laws requiring "historically accurate" renovations? In general, a store open to the public does have to be accessible. Talk with the store's neighbors to find out the zoning and compliance issues that have happened. If there is a state civil rights agency, it has jurisdiction before the federal one. Ask them. Check with your local zoning commission. Even if it is not required, it would probably be a good idea. Your local hardware store can probably help you pick out a cost-effective solution. Something as simple as a wheelchair ramp at the back door would be extremely helpful, not only to handicapped customers, but also to delivery people. |
