I am in Australia.I want to obtain a Domain name for a website. Do I have to have a business?

I read somewhere that I can apply for a domain name for my website only if I have a business. I simply want to pay for a domain name for a simple website.I want to host that website with my own server. I was told that I can apply for a "fixed IP address" instead of a domain name. But I really want to have a domain name. So...do I really have to have a registered business? Also, is there a reputable Australian company that I should apply my domain name from? Thanks you for any answers.

Anyone can purchase a domain name for any reason and virtually any use, i.e. you can't sell pot in the US via the web. You can also purchase a domain name from ANY company anywhere in the world. So, look for the best deals. I believe Yahoo lets you purchase your first domain name for only $1.99 US dollars. But, you can use anyone. Good luck!

Try godaddy.com

Hi.
You can get a totally free domain name at CO.NR
All you do in return is place a tiny advert for their free domain site.
You can get a great Free website and web tools here:

I'm not familiar with Australian laws, but in America it works this way. I would imagine Australia is the same, but I'm not sure.

You can purchase a domain name from whomever you please. You don't have to own a business. Cost is around $10 a year.

You can purchase web hosting from whomever you please also. You don't need to own a business for this either. Cost varies and can be as low as $7/month.

Where a business comes in is if you want to host your website on your own server as you stated. Keep in mind that this isn't absolutely necessary. You can purchase dedicated hosting service if you really need the resources, or get shared hosting at the lower cost as stated above. Anyway, to host on your own server you would need to set up a business account with a local internet service provider. You would then get a static ip addresse for your server. Then, with whatever registrar you purchased your domain name from you would then point the name on their name servers to your ip address.

You can purchase hosting and get a free domain name registration here...
