Think running a web server on a home DSL line is a good idea?

I use a popular dsl distributor that blocks port 80. However, I've been using port re-directing. Its worked great so far for my small sites. But do you think a dsl line is good enough to host business sites? Are there any laws against it,, etc....

There are no laws against it, but chances are if you read your ISP's policies it's prohibited by them. So if they catch you then they could terminate your service.

Beyond that, it's not a great idea anyhow. Maybe you only get a few hits a day and that's fine for now, but I did this long ago and had a single popular link go up and my connection was unusable and my server crashed. Plus, hosting accounts start at around $3 a month for the basics. You'll get far more than what you'd have at home and you'll free up all the traffic on your DSL line.

Besides, servers are targeted for viruses far more than personal machines and even basic bot crawling can suck up a lot of bandwidth on your line.

no laws against hosting a server using DSL. It really depends on how much traffic you think you're going to get to your site. If you get a lot, you may want to upgrade you access technology or host with a shared hosting company.

Read your terms of service. If your ISP is blocking port 80 running a webserver at home is probably a violation.

You have to think about the uploads on your DSL connection. How many people are you going to have visiting your site? What is your upload 640k....is that enough to support that traffic.
