Should I host a friend's 2nd baby shower?

My friend is preggo with boy#2 (boy#1 is only a year old.) She will need many baby items again, since baby #1 is still using them. I was asked by a friend of this friend to co-host a shower for her and I said yes, that I would be happy to throw a small, casual party at my home and maybe have people bring their favorite book for the baby instead of gifts. (Which I think is greedy and tacky to ask for for shower #2)

When I talked to my friend whom the shower is for, she said people in the family didn't have any problem with gifts for 2nd showers and she needed lots of stuff. (nevermind that they live in a 3 million dollar home and make a lot of money) She also said that the narrowed down list was 50 people!

So, now we're going to need to have the shower in a restrauant and it will be $1000 total, mininum. I really like this friend (and - very important - she is the wife of my husbands bosses son - someday he will take over the business...so there's some poltics involved as well.)

Should I explain to my friend that it's just too much for me finincially (never mind that I am morally against it) and risk pis*ing her off or should I just host it and keep my mouth shut?

You mentioned that you told the person who asked you to "co-host" the second shower, that you would be happy to throw a small casual party, at your home, sounds like what you can afford, isn't being considered, so I'm afraid IF it were me, I would have to explain to your friend, that you did not "sign on" for something that expensive and that you must take back an offer that you were pressured into, in the first place.

Politics aside, I would not let the politics concern me, if his job depends on you sucking up, I wouldn't want my husband to work there anyway!!!

It seems to me that you are being used, IF your "friend" is truly a friend, she wouldn't "expect" you to host the shower.

You clearly stated that you would be happy to host a "small, casual party with people bringing books instead of gifts for the baby" so you should stick to that. It's greedy to want a 2nd baby shower with all the trimmings.

By the way, why don't couples start buying their own baby items during the pregnancy instead of relying on showers? If this couple has a 3 million dollar home, she can suck it up and graciously accept a small party (which is completely fine) or be a ***** and demand someone else throw her a baby shower. Either way, if she decides to be greedy, keep yourself out of it, and don't consider her a true friend.
