Why do you have to give your address to get a domain name?

I had a website, and some guy found my home address that I registered it with. It was not good. So why do you have to give address to get a website from a domain hosting company? Should I list a fake address??? Or a friends house? its a small business & personal website thanx

It's basically done for security and billing purposes. You should be able to tell your host company not to list your address or phone, and they won't. If they do, consider switching to Yahoo. As far as I know, they do not do anything you don't want them to do.

Otherwise, I would suggest using a fake address or a PO box.

Get a PO Box. If you're running a business it might be a good idea anyway so you can receive your business mail there.

Some registrars, such as nominet (for .co.uk domains) usually send you a letter giving you access to their site so that you can update the nameservers and other dns information.

There are a handful of hosts, including myself, that offer a system called IDProtect. This allows you to hide certaind elements of your dns data, which helps stop domain theft, and in some cases identity theft (some criminals can get additional information through any domains that they know you own)
