Is it illegal to have another job as well as your main one?

A friend has just been fired for gross misconduct because she was working on creating a new business for herself and doing consulting work on occassional evenings. Is that allowed in the UK? She didn't actually do any work for the other business during working hours, but she attended one meeting in relation to it (which was in working hours). They went through her emails for evidence.

I'm a recruitment consultant. You can have as many jobs as you like but you must declare them to the taxman (when you give your NI etc to your new employer, state you have another job) as it will effect your income tax.

Regarding your freind, it depends entirely on the contract of employment she signed. This will list actions classified by the firm as gross misconduct, get her to go through it.

Well its certainly not illegal to have another job.

But some companies and government departments can make it a condition of employment that you seek approval from your employer to take on secondary employment.

And if it can be proved that your friend used company time, or company emails, or any company information to get her second job, or even made a phone call about her second job on company time..then yes..they have the right to sack her.

no its not illegal. but her main job probably felt it was a conflict of intrest, especially if she was missing work to attend meetings for the other job.

as for them going thru her email, technically the employer payes for the email services, so its THEIR email and they have the right. many jobs do that. its like one more way they keep an eye on everyone to make sure there isnt anything fishy going on.

it is not illegal bc ur friend probaly needed the extra money for her new business..... she needs too get different shifts in each job soo she doesn't have too do any other work for her other job... but if her and u are soo concerned u sould ask the government soo she doesn't get in trouble!!!!!!

She needs to look at her employment contract. That is where it would have been specified if additional employment is grounds for termination.

this isnt illegal, but it is called conflict of interest and it is a legetimite reason to fire someone

She should of not gone to a meeting during her work hours. I would of fired her too
