Stuttering problem is affecting my job. How do I fix this?

I'm a guy, early 30s, recently landed a dream consulting job after graduating from a top-tier business school. The problem is that I have always had a stutter in my speech and it's starting to affect my job. We spend a lot of time in team rooms with people, and although I'm an extrovert and talk to people, I find it awkward to get on the phone when calling partners or other firm leaders with other people room. I'm conscious that I'll stutter, look stupid or make a mistake. I'm much more comfortable stepping out of the room, making the call and coming back. This may have to do with the fact that I don't have a roommate -- always lived alone and used to my privacy. Of course, I'm fine at parties and even actively seek out people to talk to. But I know that as I move up in this job, I'll have to lead conference calls and become comfortable with getting on the phone with other people in the room. People mistake my stuttering for lack of confidence sometimes. How do I fix this?

Sounds like the telephone is the worst part for you. Look at www.stutteringhelp.org for their brochure on "talking on the telephone" and find their book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" and work through each step. Some public libraries have it or you can get it in their e-store or at Amazon.com

you're not alone, bro...try seek a speech therapist....or practice yourself on a mirror before every sessions......do not always have a negative thoughts about your problems.. Think POSITIVE and you will kick your habits..

Stand in front of the mirror and speak to yourself> Keep practicing till you feel comfortable. Nerves cause these reactions. Their are meds on the market but gum works without side effect. And by the way: Just because you have a speech impediment does not hinder you from being all you can be. My top Sargent in the marines was a terrible stutterer during morning muster. He was OK one on one but addressing the squadron he would get nervous. If you can do the job it does not matter how you talk. Do not let anyone tell you different!!!
