What are law firms looking for in applicants?

As an arts graduate who has never studied law or business I am having trouble knowing what to say in applications to law firms in order to convince them I want to be a commercial lawyer. Is reading about business in the papers enough? does anyone know any good general business studies books or any important areas to look at in the press, like the credit crunch. If you have successfully applied to law firms what tips can you give me for applications and interviews. Many thanks!

Here are some top criteria in order to be invited back for an interview:

1. Graduation from a major top-notch law school; not from merely a state certified law school;

2. Having placed within the top 2% of your class - gradewise and perhaps been on the Dean's list, graduated with Honors, etc.

3. Served any number of summer internships and especially one involving under a judge's supervision.

Good luck!

You must be joking. Please don't apply to a law firming claiming your experience stems from reading about business in the newspaper. Save yourself the humiliation.

Perhaps look at getting a paralegal certificate, or legal secretary position that needs no experience and they will train you, work from there.

Depends on what position you're applying for, commercial firms are really picky
