Network question...?

You have been contracted to build a network for
a multimedia development firm that currently
uses a 10-Mbps Ethernet network. The company
requires a high-bandwidth network for the multimedia
team, which constantly views and manipulates
large files across the network. The
company is expecting moderate growth. You are
to come up with a solution to support the highbandwidth
applications and growth potential of
this company.
Required result:
鈻?Increase network bandwidth.
Optional result:
鈻?Support future growth.
鈻?Improve server response time.
Proposed solution:
鈻?Install CAT 5 UTP cable in a star topology
with the existing hub.
鈻?Upgrade the workstation鈥檚 adapter cards to
support 100 Mbps.
鈻?Increase the amount of RAM in the server.
The proposed solution ___________.
a. achieves the required result and both optional
results
b. does not achieve the required result but
achieves both the optional results
c. does not achieve the required result but does
achieve one of the optional results
d. achieves the required result but cannot
achieve either of the optional results
e. achieves neither the required result nor either
of the optional results

I'm going to go with liz on this one. 'E'

Required result:
鈻?Increase network bandwidth.
Optional result:
鈻?Support future growth.
鈻?Improve server response time.

Proposed solution:
鈻?Install CAT 5 UTP cable in a star topology
with the existing hub.
鈻?Upgrade the workstation鈥檚 adapter cards to
support 100 Mbps.
鈻?Increase the amount of RAM in the server.

The proposed solution will not increase bandwidth support future growth or increase response time. Installing CAT 5 UTP cable and using network cards that supports speeds up to 100Mbps will not increase bandwidth within this network.

To increase server response time i guess id have to say create a server farm Rather then using one Server. Not to sure about this one.

Installing a switch rather then a hub would decrease the amount of collisions within a network and increase response time. Also installing routers within the network and creating subnetworks will decrease the amount of broadcast going across the network also increasing response time. Also with the router you can segregate unused address space for future use. And Be sure these routers and switches support 100mbps or higher to achieve your goal of increasing bandwidth.

The answer is a.

But because the question didn't tell I assume that the hub is 100 mbps.

Installing cat 5 and upgradeing cards to 100 mbps increases the bandwith.

Increasing Ram will decrease the response time of the server.

Each case does support future grows.

But if the hub was 10 mbps, even the ethernet cards were 1000 mbps it would still work with 10 mbps.

So the answer would be "c" then.

Have a nice day. :)

Hooray for CompTia and their goofy questions.

I'm going to go with E because I think the current hub is garbage, and the response bottleneck is there, not in the RAM. (I might be wrong.)

But really I'm going to with
* Replace all the cabling with cat 6.
* Install a much larger multi port 10/100/1000 switching router
* Install gig cards in the servers and the workstations.
* Tell the client that if they really want to compete they need to keep up with the last decade or so.
* Use my net+ certificate to light a cigarette in the parking lot on the way out.

C.

By keeping the old 10 Mbps hub the network will still run at 10 Mbps. You need a 100 Mbps switch, with more ports than the current hub has.

By not replacing the hub, you don't have room for future growth.

Server response MIGHT improve with the added RAM, however with the slow network, users may not notice it.

You need change the old hub to a switch, try use cat-6, and gigabit ethernet, if not at lest use cat-5E.

Don鈥檛 forget to upgrade all those cables in the wall as will.
