Would this topic be good for a college applications essay?

About a year ago, I got into a bit of trouble with the law (a misdemeanor, not drug related). What happened profoundly changed me and got me back onto the right path towards furthering my education and just leading a better life. For one of the essay topics (there are about 6), it asks about a personal experience or circumstance that has been important to my personal development. I know I can write passionately about what happened to me and how it changed my life. It would shed a lot of light on to who I am and what my goals are for the future.

Would this be a bad idea? Would putting undue attention on this illegal act help or hurt my changes of writing a winning essay?

Thanks so much for any help!

Dear Kotani, if writing about your experience and talking about it makes you feel that it will really shed light on to who you are, go ahead and talk about it, my advice is, try to be careful in the way you say it, as not every person look at things thru the same glass, but if you think it can help somebody going thru similar issues, or if you think it can be a good number on your class just go ahead, otherwise stick to a simpler but important and different experience, remember that once you have done or said something that can mark you for the rest of your life, most of people are very judgemental, I'm not trying to deterr you of telling your story, but trying to be objective looking it thru the many paths that it can get as a message. Sometimes is good to be remembered and known for a good and daring change that turned our lifes around in a good way giving a message from the heart , real and with impact . Whether you talk about it or not, I wish you blessings and luck for all your future plans.
