College Economics?

One semester of College Economics is required for my degree. I just want to know what I should expect from an economics class, so I can decide if I want to take it this semester or wait until I have a less challenging schedule. Here is a description of the class

Provides a survey of microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, comparative economic systems, historical development of economic thought, and their application to current economic problems.

If anyone can tell me any information about what this class might offer I would greatly appreciate it!

Econ is NOT easy. That class sounds like an overview of several classes.

Micro economics is about businesses (the privite sector)

Marco econ is big picture stuff and relates to the government (public sector)

International is where you learn about imports, exports and exchange rates.

Comparative Economics is the political aspect. (comparison of capital economies)

historical development is pretty much the history of economic thought. You will learn about the differant schools and different teaching throught time (Adam Smith, Karl Marx, John Keynes)

If it's required, you're probably a business major. If so, you will find it loads easier than stats or any of the anaysis classes. It focuses more on history and theories than on anything technical. Any one of those subjedcts you mentioned taken alone is a difficult class, but the general one you're required to take should be a breeze if you can read and remember, It was one of my favorite classes as an economics major.

It sounds like you'll be taking a General Economics course which some majors, such as Marketing, Finance, etc., are required to take.

Basically, you'll be getting an overview of what Econ majors take 4 years of studying to earn their degrees.

You'll probably go over the macro views of supply and demand, trade deficits, the money supply, maybe long-run macro theory, etc., basically issues at the government-level (local, state, and/or federal). You may learn cost-benefit analysis and other micro theories, which deals mainly at the firm/industry level. International trade may cover terms of trade and foreign exchange. Historical development is just that, the history of economic theory: from Adam Smith to present. And finally, applying this to current economic problems: you may discuss problems such as social security, national health care, trade deficits, etc., and how economists deal with these issues.

microeconomics looks at the individual agents in the economy (consumers and how they decision make, different types of markets from monopolies to perfectly competitive ones, firms - the costs they face, how their profit levels are determined). this area can be tricky for newcomers since it is very conceptual and mathematical.

macroeconomics looks at the whole economy and how the agents interact (banking system, government budget, inflation, employment, national income). this can be more manageable since it includes topics you may have heard of in the news.

international economics looks at trade concepts and exchange rates.

economic history looks at the origin of economic theories and concepts and those responsible for them.

in my experience, people either love or hate economics. its one of those subjects which you either get or you dont.
good luck!
