Is our children's ministry leader a hypocrite or just plain rude?

I asked the children's ministry leader at my church about serving in the children's ministry. He got all uppity. He told me that there is an application and background process. He understood that I wanted to serve but I should pray to God first and ask him what area I would serve him best. It wasn't something to take lightly. His reply was out of left field. I told him that I already prayed and how would he know if I pray or not? He didn't say anything. I have a double major in child development and special education. I graduated from a Christian university with a BA and minor in religion. I needed some experience with the younger children. Many of my friends serve in the children's ministry. I doubt if he talked down to them that way. He is a baby christian and an ex-con full of tattoos. Is he a hypocrite or just rude? I felt insulted. Should I talk to our pastor about his holier than thou attitude? I go to Calvary Chapel.

He was just being plain rude and a hypocrite....the same thing happened to me, when they wanted someone to teach in children's ministry, I offered to, and he said he needed people who knew what they were doing. I totally understand how you feel.........I could not believe it when he said that to me, and now I can't believe it's being done to you too!!

Why did you feel the need to throw in the bit about tattoos?

I'd say he's a rude hypocrite who is probably insecure about his position. With your degrees, it sounds like you would be a great volunteer. I'd talk to your pastor.

All ministry leaders, children or otherwise are hypocrites. A good many are also rude.

You are a threat to his turf.

If the ministry leader is a young Christian, then what he told you is what he's been taught you need to do. He's probably not trying to be insulting, odds are he just wants to do a good job. I would recommend talking with the pastor, and the youth leader together, that way you can get a definite yes or no on whether you can teach, and the youth leader can get some experience in how to handle the situation in the future.

Not only are there all sorts of ignorant people in the secular world, but also in the religious world as well, as our churches are now full of them.

Our churches, for most people now, seem to be ego preening grounds, rather than a place to worship God and do *real* charitable works (rather than the fake kind).

It is true in the Catholic Church as well as the Protestant Churches, and in the secular non-religious world that problem is rife.

Our world really is in a bad way right now, that I think that Our Lord is in the process of fixing - the winnowing fan is in His hand.

.

That's called legal buttcovering.

No, even you said you wanted the experience. That is not the same thing as God calling you to children's ministry. If that is all he said all of that lines up with the word of God. Even though you sound qualified in the natural with your education. You never once expressed that this was Gods purpose for your life. And for him being an ex-con and having tattoos, his old life is covered with the Blood. Where is the Love that our children need to be exposed to so that they are not arrogant criticizing people under the title of Christian. Thank god for Jesus

ok- I am first sorry if you were offended by this man- however with that said, I have to say, a background check is very good , especially when it comes to serving with kids. My son works in the children's ministry and they had to "check" him out. I would not want my children, being cared for by someone that could potentially hurt my young kids. That said- because he asked for that, does not mean that he thought there may be a problem. He did not know you had already prayed, so that is a very normal question to ask a person who is wanting to serve anywhere in the church. I attended a church at one time and had to leave because the new pastor said' "I will never tell you that the Holy Spirit told me to take this position" NOT GOOD. So when a youth leader asked you to pray- take it as a great thing, I would. Did he know that you had all these degrees? I am a professional musician, who is very involved in my church's music ministry- but it takes more than just degrees and talent to be used of God- so don't begrudge your children's ministry leader for asking questions. If you feel that he was just plain rude- you should talk to your pastor with the ministry leader. And what really bothers me though, and I could be just making an assumption here- God can use ex-cons with tatoos- God uses ordinary men, with shady backgrounds who have been changed within by the power of the Spirit. Which one of Jesus' 12 disciples had a degree? Which one was considered the "smartest" of the disciples? I will let you come up with the answer to that one.
