Hello everyone, my first time. Looks like we have a great community here.
Like everyone, I'm very sad with the discontinuation of development of Yahoo 360 and for one, I'm not thrilled with Mash, or anything Facebook alike.
I'm looking in ways of migrating my whole yahoo 360 page (and a few friends as well) to a completely new website, hopefully preserving data, page structure and database structure as well.
Being primarily a photographer/graphic designer, I'm not so fluent with web application programming (although I do have experience with front end design), I hope to receive your opinion about the process.
And for our legal experts, what is the legal implication of this? Would I be subjected to "ripping" yahoo, "stealing" their members and so on?
Hope to have your replies. I think you are misunderstanding what's going on. Y!360 is closing in the sense that it may no longer be called Y!360 when the transition to a new social networking platform is done. So, what other people call "closing", I call "reconstruction."
Yahoo has decided to combine it's 3 services (360, Mash, and the regular Yahoo Members Profile) that basically accomplish the same thing (i.e. telling the world about yourself) into one service. They just haven't pinned down the "how" of creating this "universal profile". The transition should happen in early 2008.
So, if there are things that you do like about Yahoo! 360 that you would like to see remain intact, you should state those aspects on the Y!360 team's blog at http://blog.360.yahoo.com/product_360 . That is also where you can read about the changes in store for Y!360. They will create a tool so that your blogs and friends will be transfered to the new platform. Nor is Y!360 going to be completely converted to Y!Mash, although it will share the same platform.
Many people have switched to the startup Multiply.com, as it is similar to Y!360 and they have a tool to transfer your content to their service. You can also invite anyone you like, which is no different from other similar services. However, I would caution there's no transfer tool away from Multiply if you find that you don't like it. Some people are using it as a backup, just in case the Yahoo transition has glitches. Yet I recommend that you do a true backup of your content as I outline in my blog here:
http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-4D4zxsg6f... . There's another site that's popular with Europeans - Vox.com . Although, I'm not sure of their transfer tools.
You will not be able to re-create your Y!360 space elsewhere unless you have some serious computer programming/databasing skills and insider confidential company information. Y!360 is not just a social networking service. It's also a way to integrate various Yahoo services into one place. It is a proprietary system.
So, I wouldn't recommend spending time doing a re-creation of your space. A better use of your time would be to backup your content and be prepared to transfer Yahoo's new platform in early 2008 OR jump the gun and completely move to a different service now.
I hope this information helps. I'm not thrilled with Y!Mash either (which is a "beta" product too & doesn't have a guaranteed future). I don't use Facebook. I don't like MySpace. However, as I was willing to wait for Yahoo to fix the myriad of glitches in Y!360 (which they haven't), I can at least wait to try out Yahoo's new social networking service before making any drastic moves. Thanks for voting! Report It
