Why are standard classification systems for ecological communities important? |
I'm having an conversation with an advocate for almost unchecked development and am looking for the best way to put my thoughts into words. What are the practical applications of the standard classification system? Standard classification systems in any field are useful in allowing one person to know what another is talking about. To take a simple example, "corn", in the US refers to Zea mays (maize). Elsewhere, it can be used to refer to any grain. Zea mays, incidently, will be understood anywhere, even by people who speak no English. |
