Is Intel's new Core 2 Duo truly a jump in performance?

I'm looking to upgrade my computer, and with AMD and Intel's war and my mates giving me different advises and having different biases and loyalties, I want professional opinions. Possibly people who've experienced both chips eg. FX-62 compared to 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo.

Also, ~IMPORTANT~

1) Would there be any huge difference between 2.4GHz and 2.66GHz given that I use the same 2GB PC-6400 XMS memory and new and awesome Gigabyte motherboard and an ATi Radeon 512MB X1900 card and 320GB HDD? Cause I'm quite blank with the Core 2 Duo's performance as I have yet to see one in action myself.

2) Should I wait to watch the development of the Core 2 Duo for any misgivings/improvements or just upgrade now...? I can say that AMD's quad processor are a bit ahead of their time given that computer applications have yet to even properly and fully utilise Core 2 Duo's, 2GB RAM, expensive GPUs etc. Reminds me of Ageia Physx's PPU card being ahead of its time.

I own an fx62 and a e6700. And i'm sorry to say but the intel is quite a bit faster. I am personally an amd fan but I have to give it to intel on this one. I dont think that ddr3 will be out for several years so I would go with the core 2 duo e6700. The difference between it and the e6800 it not worth the price difference. And you will save $175 on the intel vs. the fx62 if you get it from newegg. I actually feel guilty telling you this because I love amd and the fx62 is my gaming computer.

And as fas as the quad core's go you are absolutely right that there is nothing written for it and it will be seriously overpriced. The difference between 2.4 and 2.66 is all in the eye of the beholder. I personally would notice the difference. But for the average person I doubt it. Based on your ram and video card I would say to go with the e6700. I hope this helped. I will say this in closing I have found just like you that almost everyone is bias...ati vs. nvidia, etc.
